Our Wood Siding Painting Offerings

  • Smooth Wood Boards: We expertly paint smooth wood siding, such as clapboard or Maibec-style siding, bringing a fresh and elegant look to your home’s exterior.
  • Rough-Cut Wood Surfaces: For rougher surfaces like board and batten, we have the skills to ensure a quality finish. We often recommend a premium solid stain, rather than an exterior paint, for these types of wood to achieve the best results.
  • Surface Preparation Limitations: We handle jobs that require minor surface preparation like localized scraping and sanding. However, for projects needing extensive scraping and sanding, we will recommend consulting a more general painting contractor.
  • Caulk and Filler: We provide extensive exterior caulking and wood filling services as part of our preparation steps.
  • Recoating Previously Painted Siding: If your previously painted siding is still in good condition (i.e., not excessively peeling), we can provide an effective recoating service, leveraging the best of both worlds using our amazing spray painting process and also back-brushing so the wood absorbs the product
  • Additional Wood Surfaces: Besides siding, we also paint other wood features like window sills and doors. However, we typically do not undertake deck or floor painting projects.

General Procedures for Wood Siding Painting

  1. Cleaning: The first step involves thoroughly cleaning the wood siding. This can include use of a pressure washer or hand washing with a mild detergent to remove dirt, mildew, and loose paint. When pressure washing we are very careful to not gouge or damage the wood.
  2. Scraping and sanding: Using paint scrapers and sanders we will remove loose paint, flaking paint, peeling paint and any other old caulking or old paint that would prevent the new exterior coating from adhering to your siding and trim. Often this prep work means sanding down to bare wood to get the exterior siding ready for primer and paint.
  3. Caulking and Filling: We’ll use caulking around windows and to fill in gaps and cracks in the wood, and exterior spackling compound for larger gaps or holes. These steps go a long way in making the new paint job outstanding.
  4. Masking: As with all of our exterior paint jobs, masking with paper, tape, and drop cloths is a huge part of our process and you can read about it in more detail on our spray painting page. Good masking is crucial before we apply paint and primer and makes the process of doing the second coat more efficient as well.
  5. Priming: Before we actually paint your home, we usually need to apply primer to any bare exterior surfaces. If we’re doing rough-cut wood like board and batten, then this step is not necessary, since solid stain is meant to penetrate into the wood on its own.
  6. Painting: We use a paint sprayer to do the actual painting, but will also have a crew member following immediately behind using a roller or brush to manually work the product into the wood. For rough-cut or obviously porous wood, this step is crucial. For smooth and well-sealed clapboard, the back-rolling is not beneficial and we’ll price the job accordingly. Every time we paint wood siding we leverage our spray painting experience to ensure we’re protecting the exterior of your home as best as possible.
  7. Spray and Back-Brush Method: As mentioned above, this is especially important for rough-surfaced wood like board and batten, we use the spray and back-brush method. This involves spraying a layer of paint and then back-brushing it to ensure it penetrates deeply into the wood grain and textures. It also helps to prevent lap marks that may be left from the paint gun alone. We are very proud of how we’ve refined this incredible process and it’s a big reason we can offer a 5-year non-peeling warranty even on a porous and unpredictable substrate like wood.
  8. Touch-Ups: After the initial coats of paint, we inspect the siding for any areas that may need additional paint or touch-ups to ensure an even and complete coverage.
  9. Final Inspection: We conduct a thorough final inspection to ensure the quality of our work and that every aspect of the wood siding is impeccably painted.

Quality Exterior Paint and Primer, Caulk and Filler

For all of our services we take the quality of the materials we use very seriously. It’s no different when we put a fresh coat on wood surfaces. We use top-notch primers and paints from the best suppliers like Sherwin Williams, Dulux, or Benjamin Moore. Most products nowadays are water-based acrylic paints which are far more flexible than the old oil-based products of the past, and are much safer to use and more eco-friendly.

Choosing the right paint that protects the wood not only from external elements like rain and sun, but also from shifting and warping is important. In the cities we service of  Oakville, Hamilton, and Niagara Falls,  the weather and temperature changes drastically from season to season and a paint surface must be flexible so the paint doesn’t flake or peel after only a few years. Many of the best products are now self-priming on wood surfaces, but there are instances where a premium primer is required as well. During your consultation we will discuss all of these things with you to ensure that you’re getting the best possible job without overpaying for something that is not necessary.

Likewise not all caulk and fillers are created equal. We are sure to use caulking from the same quality providers, with lifetimes of 25-45 years and dry to a finish that is paintable. Again, remaining flexible is extremely important in our Ontario climate and we do not skimp on the quality of these important materials.
