Exterior Spray Painting Services for House Siding

Our Spray Painting Story

Many years ago, our founder Kevin Bauer was already a seasoned painter running a typical interior and exterior painting company. One day, a client asked Kevin if he was able to paint the aluminum siding on his extremely faded and dated 1960s home. Kevin had heard of it being done before using a paint sprayer, so he did some research (no, this was before YouTube…) and diligently prepared and painted the exterior siding for his client.

From that point on, Kevin was hooked.  It was only a couple short years before he had completely changed his business to specialize in exterior spray painting! Bauer Painting became We Paint Siding, and for more than 10 years, we’ve been delivering stunning transformations to clients, while always improving and evolving our processes.

  • And by the way, as of Fall 2023, that first job still looks great and has remained maintenance-free.

Join us as we share just a bit (not too many secrets) of what we know about exterior spray painting for surfaces like vinyl and aluminum siding, wood, brick, stucco, and more!

Advantages and Disadvantages of Spray Painting

In many ways, an airless paint sprayer is a double-edged painter’s tool. For a professional who knows how to use the equipment, plan out the process, anticipate challenges, and possesses the skill and training to execute the job properly, there is simply no other way to paint. But applying paint by spray also brings in a number of risks and concerns that must be controlled and managed to reap the benefits of this innovative method.

At We Paint Siding we mostly utilize airless paint spraying methods, where the paint itself is pressurized up to 3300 psi, this is in contrast to other methods like HVLP or air-assisted spray that we utilize far less frequently. For this discussion we will focus on the use of airless spray pumps.

Advantages of Airless Spray Painting

Spraying provides an even coat of paint, ensuring consistent coverage. This is particularly beneficial for textured surfaces, or surfaces like soffits and eavestroughs with many indentations or molded metal where brushes and rollers will miss all the nooks and crannies.

The fine mist produced by airless sprayers lays down a smooth, high-quality finish that is far superior to the finish achieved with brushes or rollers.

Spraying allows the painter to build up a thicker and also more even coating, which is especially beneficial on smooth surfaces like aluminum or vinyl siding.  The molecules of the paint can laterally bind to each other much more strongly than when applied by brush or roller which produces huge ridges and valleys in the coating (on a microscopic level).

The smooth coating resists dirt and debris build-up, because it is so smooth and self-cleans in the rain. This actually increases the lifespan as well, since less debris means less moisture to erode away the surface over the years. And believe it or not, smoother finishes are actually more reflective as well, meaning the surface will take on a lower intensity of damaging sun rays, compared to a brush and roller finish.

When hiring us, you will reap these benefits over and above the general benefits that any professional paint job brings. Maintaining and beautifying the surfaces on your home is always a great investment!

Disadvantages of Spraying for Exterior House Painting

This is the big one. Dried paint in the wrong place is a vile thing, it’s true. When spray-painting it’s imperative to prevent overspray by any means necessary. Having a system and process in place to quickly inspect, identify, and immediately clean any minor leakage is paramount. Read below to hear how we manage this risk using our systems, training, and experience.

Spray painting often requires extensive prep work, including masking off areas to protect them from overspray, setting up and troubleshooting equipment, and then cleaning up or ‘de-masking’ afterwards. This is tedious and can be more time-consuming compared to preparation for brush and roller painting.

When using a paint sprayer, the paint comes out really fast and at high volume! An unskilled technician will produce a terrible job with runs, overspray, and thick and thin spots. Not planning for the weather could leave him spraying dark paint on blazing hot surfaces in direct sunlight, or laying down a thick coat (which takes time to dry) only a couple hours before a rain-fall.

The equipment is expensive and requires proper maintenance. Any oversight, and the paint could dry up inside the sprayer and ruin it.

Keep reading to learn more about how we manage and control these above risks in order to reap the incredible benefits that this method offers. There are many painters out there that may use paint sprayers, but most do not have enough experience or follow a proper system to ensure an overspray, weather, or project management disaster doesn’t occur.

Our Professional Approach to Siding Painting

We don’t just rely on the individual experience of our crew members to provide an incredible service and paint job, we also lean heavily on procedures and systems to ensure success. Additionally, our crews are always filled with well-trained and teachable painters and labourers who perform their tasks with dedication and reliability. If you read our online reviews, you’ll see this theme repeated over and over again from our satisfied customers.

A Refined Spray Painting Process

  1. Clearly written and detailed work orders ensure all crew members know exactly what the job entails.
  2. A plan is made on every job, using checklists to consider all possible factors like current weather conditions, forecasted conditions, crew size, heights/access concerns, multiple colour tones, necessary drying time, and many more.
  3. Every crew member has their tasks and the rest of the crew rely on them. It is a team effort to get the surfaces prepared and masked in the right order and on schedule.
  4. Surfaces are pressure-washed, scraped, sanded, caulked, filled, and masked as necessary.
  5. Spray painting is done in a planned and orderly fashion, with all members assisting with access, refilling paint, additional shield masking, and touch-up painting.
  6. Inspections are performed and reported regularly, ensuring all deficiencies are touched up in a timely manner.
  7. The final result is usually stunning, as can be seen on our before/after page.

Specialized Teams and Reliable Spray Painters

Our crews perform exterior spray painting jobs every single day. We are specialized and repeat the same procedure over and over again. We do not do interior painting, or deck staining, or epoxy flooring, or even jobs that require excessive wood preparation.

You are hiring a highly refined and specialized group of individuals to perform this technical service and deliver an incredible looking and long-lasting benefit to your home.

Deep Experience Across Varied Painting Projects

Over many years of specialized spray painting, we’ve seen a lot and have acquired invaluable experience as a company. We’ve painted large and small houses, from fine finishes on brand new doors, to bulk spraying of barns or warehouses, from houses with extremely tight proximity to neighbours to extreme heights requiring anchor points for fall arrest or aerial lifts.

A general painting company that does not spray paint every day would not develop this level of experience. Our advantage is that we truly are specialized, so not only are our systems refined, but we’ve accumulated a tremendous amount of experience over the years.

Systems and Quality Control

Many painters will boast about experience, but have they ever had the discipline to put proper systems, checks and balances in place to ensure every job goes smoothly?

We can assure you that most painters have not done this like We Paint Siding has.

Clear Communication and Expectations

From the initial consultation you will see that we are thorough in our approach:

  1. We listen and understand the desires and concerns of our customers
  2. We clearly lay out what the scope of work will be in writing
  3. Our communications protocols ensure you are always informed about scheduling and job progress
  4. Our channels are always open for questions or concerns by email, phone call, or directly with your crew leader

The “O” Word – Thorough Masking and Protection

Controlling overspray is possibly the most important part of a spray painting job besides the technique of actually applying the paint. As such, we do not rely solely on the specific skills or abilities of individual crew members, but rather on our systems and procedures as a whole, to ensure the job is always done right. Even a highly skilled individual can have a bad day, but checklist protocols and a great team rarely fail.

When it comes to protecting your surrounding surfaces and the surfaces of your neighbours, we leave no room for error. The crew members diligently mask off all surrounding areas using an endless array of techniques, tricks, and materials that we’ve mastered over the years:

  • masking paper of various sizes and thickness
  • masking tapes of various sizes and adhesion levels
  • duct tapes and other types of tape for different purposes like sticking to brick or roof shingles
  • plastic film of various sizes and thickness
  • vinyl sheets for covering or hanging
  • canvas drop sheets for covering or hanging
  • covers for cars
  • copious amounts of cardboard and other firm material
  • metal and cardboard hand-held spray shields
  • plastic bags for covering lights, sconces, and many other smaller items

The many surfaces around your home’s exterior all require different techniques and materials to properly and reliably protect. The process of masking is way more technical than it seems at first, and even otherwise experienced professionals can quickly become frustrated with the process.

But we have systems and operating procedures that prepare us for the best possible outcome for all surfaces and conditions.

Spray Painting Solutions for Stormy Weather

Properly planning is especially important for exterior painting services, where the weather and atmospheric conditions are such a large factor. The only way to perform reliable spray painting projects is to anticipate all the things that could go wrong and plan to avoid or mitigate them.

Current Conditions – Properly considering the current conditions is crucial in any residential painting job.  Here are just a few examples for spray painting in particular:

  • Morning Dew: If there is a lot of dew in the morning it will affect how well masking can stick and change what materials and techniques need to be used. Usually much more adhesive tape needs to be used in this case, but watch out if it gets very hot later in the day, because highly adhesive tapes can cause problems if they get baked onto surfaces!
  • Humidity: Likewise, humidity is a huge factor when siding painting and all other exterior painting applications. It affects not only how the paint finish will lay down and cure, but also how well the masking will hold up.
  • Heat: On a very hot day, tape adhesive can melt or become baked on and cause problems.
  • Cold: On cold days, masking may have a lot of trouble sticking, especially if coupled with high winds.
  • Exposure: All jobs must be planned around the sun, we have to avoid spraying in direct sunlight as much as possible. To accomplish this we need to have a good plan from the very beginning of the day.
  • Wind: Wind is a massive factor when spray painting and there are many things to take into consideration including shielding, distance from the substrate when spraying, pressure level of the pump, spray gun nozzle tip, direction of the wind, and many other things. We know how to adjust and dial all these things in to achieve that top-rated service we promise on every project.

Forecasted Conditions – When planning a new exterior painting job, our expert painters and crew leaders will ask questions like the following to be sure to keep all factors in mind before they proceed:

  • Is there rain forecasted later?
  • Is there rain forecasted for overnight?
  • What will the humidity be like today?
  • What direction will the sun travel around the house today?
  • Where will the shade be in the morning and afternoon?
  • Will the masking need to stay up overnight?

Our experienced outdoor painters know that offering spray painting services requires more careful planning and more specialized painting techniques in order to provide the cost-effective but like new results that are promised and expected for our customer’s homes.

Exterior Paint Products for Spray Application

Whether you need home or commercial painting services, it’s especially important that we use industry proven paints when spray painting. At We Paint Siding we use the best and most appropriate products from suppliers like Sherwin Williams and Dulux.

Trusted Providers of Paint Formulated for Spraying

Sherwin Williams has been making paint for over 150 years and they’ve been making products for spray application on surfaces like aluminum and vinyl for over 50 years. We trust their vast experience and expertise in formulating the best products that will not only provide added curb appeal, but also long-term protection for the ever important investment that is your house.

When hiring house painters like us, you’re already committing to an investment that is much lower than the cost of replacement surfaces, and so it only makes sense to spend the little extra that is necessary for a top quality product. Our affordable spray painting services will greatly boost your home’s existing value. The reality is that the biggest part of the expense for your exterior revamp is the labour, and so it doesn’t make sense to skimp on material.

There are some painting companies out there that claim they have formulated their own ‘brew’ of paint that is specialized for aluminum and vinyl siding painting.

  • Be careful of these claims, as their product is less than 10 years old and unproven in the long run.
  • They may claim that it allows them to offer a superior product for a better price, but in reality they are relying on it as a source of extra profits.
  • This is classic ‘snake-oil salesman’ behaviour.
  • They have not found a ‘magic’ formula that 150 years and thousands of chemists somehow ‘missed’ at serious paint and coatings manufacturers like Sherwin Williams.

Instead, our exterior painters trust the track record and proven results of our suppliers for all of our clients’ painting needs. We believe the long-term success of our business lies in providing the best possible value for our customers.

Paints Designed for Spray Application

The product needs of a professional providing spray painting services is very different from a DIY homeowner who is painting their front-porch railing. As such, we typically do not use the same exact products that are heavily marketed as the ‘best’ paints to retail customers.

DIY products like Sherwin Williams Emerald or Duration are outstanding paints that are great for self-priming on wood surfaces, and filling in gaps and imperfections in surfaces that have not been professionally prepared (ie: DIY work). They are extremely fast drying and easy to work with and recoat quickly. In short, all the things that a retail customer wants to hear when buying paint.

Products that are formulated more for spray application have different properties like longer ‘open time’ and more self-leveling abilities. Furthermore they will not clog up a spray machine or need any thinning to be applied by spray. They can be used under different pressures, conditions, spray nozzle tip sizes, and across a range of different temperatures.

These products, such as Super Paint or Latitude by Sherwin Williams are not marketed to retail customers as much as those mentioned above, but they are just as durable and long-lasting. They just provide different properties that are more suitable for professional spray application.

Our Specialized Spray and Back-Brush Methods for Wood Siding, Brick or Stucco

While the paints we use are incredible for spray application, there are situations where we also need to manually back-brush or back-roll the product into the substrate to achieve the necessary results for a proper repaint. For substrates like rough-cut wood, brick or stucco, the friction from manual application is necessary to work into all the pores of the surface.

But rather than avoid spray painting altogether we have developed and utilized our innovative approach of applying the paint by spray and then back-brushing or back-rolling immediately afterwards.

By applying by spray we:

  1. leverage our masterful process and expertise in masking and preparation
  2. apply a large amount of product for a maximal coating

And then by back-brushing or back-rolling we:

  1. achieve maximum penetration into porous surfaces like wood, brick, or stucco
  2. utilize friction to work the paint over the entire surface area of the substrate

You can read more about this incredible method on our service pages that discuss the intricacies of painting these different types of surfaces:
