Let's Paint That Old Vinyl

A lot of homeowners are still surprised to hear this, but vinyl siding is actually a fantastic surface for painting. Though it definitely needs the right kind of preparation, correct application, and the best paint for the job…

What really makes vinyl stand out is its non-porous nature which completely blocks the passage of moisture. This characteristic ensures that once the coating is correctly applied, bonded, and cured, it is highly unlikely to peel. This is a significant contrast to wood surfaces, where moisture can permeate and place undue stress on the paint film.

Getting it right every time is key. Keep reading to find out how we nail it with every vinyl siding paint job we take on, whether it’s for our valued homeowners or our commercial clients.

Planning and Execution Every Time We Paint Vinyl Siding

Every project starts with a detailed free estimate. We take the time to understand all the nuances of your specific painting needs.

We primarily manage scheduling through email, ensuring clear and consistent communication with homeowners. Staying informed and updated is a cornerstone of our service.

Our team follows a precise Pressure Washing Work Order to thoroughly clean the siding while safeguarding the surrounding areas from any potential damage.

When it’s time to paint, our crew relies on in-depth Work Orders and Safety and Hazard Assessments. This thorough planning guarantees that no aspect is overlooked and safety is prioritized.

Utilizing the Work Order, our crew devises a strategic plan that considers various factors like weather conditions, preparation work, colour tones, and crew size. This plan is formulated for every job through an online checklist, allowing project managers and schedulers to monitor progress.

Our teams are required to complete daily checklists that cover extensive details of the job’s progression, ensuring consistency and quality at every stage.

As work progresses, updates flow seamlessly from our checklists to our customers, keeping them informed at all times.

The actual work is carried out with the expertise and specialized knowledge We Paint Siding has garnered over the years. We understand the unique requirements of refinishing vinyl siding and apply this knowledge to each project.

The Benefits of Spray Painting

Spray painting presents a series of significant advantages for vinyl siding, an approach we have embraced due to our extensive experience and the superior results it delivers. Here’s a breakdown of why we choose to use paint sprayers as much as possible and why this method is especially effective for vinyl siding:

  • A Consistent Coating: Spraying provides a consistent coat of paint over the entire surface of the vinyl siding. This even application is essential for materials like vinyl, which are smooth and show coating deficiencies clearly. The spray method ensures every part of the siding gets an equal amount of paint, avoiding any patchy or inconsistent looks that could occur with manual techniques.

  • Efficient Production: Despite the preparatory and masking stages being seen as laborious by some, we’ve fine-tuned our techniques over the years. Our skilled teams can complete a spray-painting task more swiftly than others might achieve with brushes or rollers. This results in a faster turnaround for homeowners, minimizing disruption. The efficiency of spray paint application doesn’t compromise the quality, but rather enhances the overall efficiency of the process.

  • Superior Adhesion and Longevity: A crucial aspect of working with vinyl siding is ensuring the coating sticks well and endures over time. Spray painting applies the paint in such a way that it forms a more effective bond with vinyl surfaces. We use the right type of paint, specifically a flexible and high-grade acrylic product formulated for spray application, to guarantee proper adhesion.

  • Comprehensive Area Coverage: Due to the often horizontal nature of vinyl siding, it can be challenging to ensure paint reaches every nook with a roller or brush. Spray painting enables thorough coverage, including hard-to-reach areas and edges. This is particularly vital for when we’re also painting additional elements like gutters, fascia, soffits, and trim.

  • Exquisite Finish: The finish from spray painting is remarkably smoother and has a more professional appearance compared to hand painting. This is crucial for vinyl siding where any flaws can be more noticeable. The spray method imparts a sleek, neat look that enhances the home’s curb appeal.

  • Further Advantages: For more details and insights on the benefits of this method, such as enhanced durability, stronger molecular bonding, and self-cleaning features, visit our Spray Painting page!

At We Paint Siding, we utilize the benefits of spray painting to offer a superior service for vinyl siding. Our team of seasoned painters understands the specific requirements of various siding materials, including vinyl, and employs optimal techniques to ensure your home not only looks fantastic but also enjoys long-lasting protection.

A Proven System for Refinishing Faded and Dated Vinyl

When you hire us to paint your siding, you can trust that we have a tried and true process. Bringing new life to your current siding requires the proper execution of a number of important steps:

Pressure Washing the Siding

  • Comprehensive Cleaning: The initial step involves an in-depth cleaning of the vinyl siding. We use a pressure washer or power washer, ensuring all dirt, grime, and residue are eliminated. This is crucial for the new paint to properly adhere.
  • Extended Reach: Our team uses extension wands, reaching up to 24 feet, to safely and effectively clean high areas, guaranteeing proper cleaning while preventing damage to adjacent surfaces.
  • Mildewcide Cleaner: Old siding often has mildew or mold growing on it in certain areas and we will use a chemical cleaning solution on these spots as well as a physical scrubbing with a hard or soft-bristled brush to remove any contaminants that may interfere with the paint job. Sometimes this means a black stain will remain, but any current or active growth will be removed.
  • Adequate Drying Time: Once the siding has been cleaned and all cleaners rinsed off, we will need to let it dry completely. It’s vital that there’s no lingering moisture on the vinyl before we commence painting.

Preparing the Substrate and Masking Off Surrounding Areas

  • Scraping and Sanding: Sometimes there is some old caulking or remnants of vegetation on the surfaces and we will scrape and sand these off. Our goal is to remove 85-90% of old material, ensuring it doesn’t affect paint adhesion or longevity.
  • Filling Holes and Gaps: Nail or screw holes in your siding will be filled or caulked. We also address old, deteriorating window caulking, repairing or replacing as needed to protect your siding.
  • Meticulous Masking: We carefully mask off areas like windows and doors to prevent unintended painting, ensuring a neat, professional finish. Masking is a critical part of our process, which you can learn more about on our Spray Painting page.

Spray Painting the Siding for a Superior Finish

Adhering to our well-crafted plan, our team methodically moves around your home, applying the coating by spray. They work systematically, following the plan to avoid direct sunlight, overspray, or numerous other potential pitfalls. Teamwork is paramount to make sure that the job goes smoothly for the best possible result. That being said, there is a special skill to the actual spray application as well and our painters are well-trained and experienced from doing it every day.

Spray Painting Technique

  • Quality Paint: We use top quality exterior house paint that is meant for application by spray. These paints are also formulated for use on various types of siding, including metal and vinyl. These products from Sherwin Williams are durable and flexible, ready for the harsh changing seasonal weathers of Ontario.
  • Building Up The Coating: With spray painting, we’re adept at layering the coating. This means applying as much paint as necessary to achieve maximal protection, but without causing sags or runs. Sometimes, we allow a first coat to dry before adding a second coat; other times, we build it up in one go. In either case, the spray method allows us to lay on a coating that is considerably thicker than traditional hand-painting methods.
  • Even Application: Given the horizontal nature of siding, our skilled painters ensure the finish is applied uniformly across each panel, maintaining consistency and avoiding common issues like drips or runs.
  • Quality Control: We ensure that the paint won’t contain any ‘holidays’ or ‘flashing’, maintaining the beauty and integrity of your home’s exterior surface.

De-Masking, Touch-Ups, and Clean Up

  • De-Masking: The ‘reveal’ — when all the masking is removed — is a moment of joy. It’s when the dramatic transformation of your home becomes evident, always a delightful surprise for our customers.
  • Final Inspection and Touch-Ups: Post painting, our team inspects the siding, making any necessary touch-ups to guarantee the highest quality finish.
  • Thorough Cleaning Up: Our commitment includes leaving your property as tidy as when we arrived. We carefully remove all masking materials, ensuring your home looks crisp and clean.
  • Drying and Curing Time: It doesn’t take long for the siding to dry to the touch, and as soon as we’ve let the paint dry, we can carefully reinstall things like shutters, awnings, or other fixtures that were removed. But for things like trellises, water barrels or BBQs, we recommend giving the siding at least a couple of weeks to fully cure and harden up before putting them back and using them, as the moisture, heat, or other factors could compromise the new finish.

Other Factors to Consider When Painting Old Siding

Painting exterior vinyl siding involves critical considerations to ensure a quality job. Our experience with vinyl siding underscores the importance of a thorough process and precision craftsmanship.

The Best Paint Products for Vinyl Siding

  • Type of Paint: It’s vital that we use a paint that is meant for vinyl siding. We primarily use premium exterior acrylic paint, capable of withstanding diverse weather conditions and flexible enough to expand and contract with the vinyl substrate. We use products that are meant for both spray-application and for vinyl surfaces.
  • Trusted Suppliers: We mostly use specific products like Super Paint or Latitude from Sherwin Williams, or Diamond from Dulux, among other high-quality options suitable for vinyl siding. Every gallon of paint is clearly labeled and double-checked by the supplier and also the crew for colour and sheen uniformity. These are self-priming products that are more appropriate for spray application than the mainstream products like Emerald or Duration which are marketed more towards retail and DIY users (although those are fantastic products for their own purposes as well!)

Considerations for When You Choose Your Paint Colour

When planning to refresh your vinyl siding with a new coat of paint, it’s important to carefully consider the choice of colour. One key aspect to keep in mind is the advisability of using very dark colours on vinyl siding. Although there are some limitations, many colour combinations are available for your new vinyl siding paint job.

  • Absorption of Heat: Darker colours absorb more heat compared to lighter hues. This is particularly relevant for vinyl siding, which can be affected by excessive heat absorption. You’ll want to consider this factor when choosing your colours.
  • Potential for Warping: Due to its nature, vinyl expands and contracts with temperature changes. Dark colours, which absorb more heat, can exacerbate this movement, potentially leading to warping or distortion of the siding.
  • Current Colour and Compatibility: When painting over existing vinyl, the current colour of your siding can influence your colour choice. The darker the new paint compared to the old, the more heat it will absorb, which might affect the siding.
  • Vinyl Safe Paints: In the past it was not possible to paint vinyl siding in a darker colour than the original due the reasons mentioned above. However most suppliers have now created pigment and colourant options that are ‘vinyl safe’, meaning that the siding will not warp even if painted in a very dark colour. This means MOST colours are now available for our clients, however there are still some restrictions with the darkest of colours like blacks and very dark greys or extremely deep blues or reds.

Shifting and Expanding Siding

Vinyl siding tends to expand and contract a lot with the changing temperatures. Since most of our paint jobs are completed in the warm or hot months of the year, this means that the siding is often fully expanded when we do our work. As such the siding slats may be overlapping each horizontally and when we apply our paint, it does not reach the areas that have ‘shifted’ or expanded underneath the neighbouring slats.

This means that when the temperature turns cold and the siding contracts, those small slivers of the previous siding colour may become visible as the slats pull back from each other.

This only happens on a certain small percentage of vinyl sided houses each year and this situation is fully covered under our siding warranty. We’ll come back later in the season in the coolest paintable weather and apply two coats of paint on these slivers by hand so that the siding colour is uniform again. We always leave time in the season each year to make it to the 3-4 houses where the paint might require this touch-up.

That being said, it is possible that the siding may contract further in the coldest months of winter and unfortunately nothing can be done about this as it’s not possible to apply paint in the winter. The freezing conditions will not allow the paint to dry. But as soon as the weather warms up again, the siding will expand again and completely cover up those slivers.

Necessary Tools and Equipment for the Paint Job

  • Precision Tools: Our arsenal includes high-performance paint sprayers, pressure washers, and quality preparation tools, enabling us to apply primer and paint efficiently for a smooth, even finish.
  • Safety Gear: We place a high emphasis on safety, equipping our team with necessary gear and going beyond industry standards in fall arrest and ladder safety. This may include installing anchor points, using harnesses, or utilizing aerial lifts when beneficial.
  • Professional-Grade Equipment: Our equipment is carefully selected for its effectiveness in painting exterior vinyl siding. This encompasses an array of tools for masking, access, ladders, scaffolding, and more, ensuring we can tackle any aspect of the painting process.

The Tremendous Benefits of Exterior Painting for Vinyl Siding

Revitalizing your home’s exterior with a fresh coat of paint on the vinyl siding brings numerous benefits. At We Paint Siding, we focus on more than just updating the siding colour. Here’s how painting can enhance and protect your home:

Enhancing Curb Appeal and Property Value

  • Total Transformation: Our services can dramatically transform your home, making it look brand new. Our Before and After page showcases some amazing examples.
  • Custom Colour Schemes: Painting your house’s exterior is not only a ‘refresh’ of the existing colours, but you have the option to completely change the colours and style of your house. With a wide range of siding colours available, you can personalize your home’s exterior to suit your taste.
  • Boosting Property Value: A high-quality paint job not only improves your home’s look but also increases its market value. If you decide to paint your vinyl siding, it’s a smart home improvement move.
  • Cost-Effective Upgrade: There are not many other renovation projects that can provide such a large change to your house for such a reasonable price. If you’re wondering if painting is worth it, in most cases, the answer is yes!

Protecting and Preserving Your Vinyl Siding

  • Improved Durability: Using the right paint, like an acrylic latex urethane paint formulated for exterior use, protects your siding from the elements and helps the paint to withstand wear and tear. The harmful rays of the sun will beat down the surface of vinyl, possibly causing it to become pitted or porous. A high-quality coating will protect against this.
  • Maintaining Flexibility: Likewise, the elements will cause your siding to become brittle and less flexible over time. The result is vinyl that can crack and break a lot more easily when a tree branch or ball hits it, or even just from the natural expansion and contraction that comes with the seasons. A new paint job goes a long way in shielding the vinyl substrate from this exposure and therefore it is able to maintain it’s flexibility.
  • Prolonging Siding Life: Proper maintenance, like refinishing the surface every 15-20 years, significantly extends the life of your vinyl siding. When you use an exterior paint that’s designed for vinyl and help it bond properly, you’re investing in the longevity of your siding.

The We Paint Siding Warranty

We are proud to offer a 10-year non-peeling or flaking warranty on all of our vinyl siding painting projects. In reality the paint job will last much longer than that without peeling. Eventually the finish will fade, especially if exposed to direct sunlight, and this may cause it to become chalky or ‘powdered’, but this usually takes closer to 15-25 years and can be fixed with another simple re-coating.

Since vinyl makes such a good substrate for painting, provided it is cleaned and the job is done properly, then the only real factor that can cause peeling is some kind of error in the process. And if this were to occur, the impact would be seen almost immediately, it would peel within a year or two. And so our 10-year warranty guarantees that you are protected against even this remote possibility.
