Exterior Aluminum Siding Painting Experts

We're Top Rated on HomeStars

We hope it’s already clear to you that if you’re located in the Greater Toronto or Golden Horseshoe areas of Ontario, and you’re looking for professional siding painting services, then you’ve come to the best place!

At We Paint Siding we’re obsessed with exterior refinishing of all kinds of substrates, but our bread and butter service is re-painting faded and dated aluminum siding. We can bring old faded aluminum siding back to new life with any colours you like, and all for a fraction of the cost of new siding.

Usually replacement siding will be vinyl, and so you’d be paying four times (4x) more money to rip down your nice metal material and replace it with vinyl that quickly becomes brittle. To replace with new aluminum or metal siding these days would cost 6-8x more than painting would!

Proudly serving Etobicoke, Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, Milton, Guelph, Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Brantford, St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and all surround cities and towns, we hope that we can have the opportunity freshen up your aluminum siding and give you a ‘new’ home this season!

Professional Painting Contractors with Extensive Experience

The biggest and best thing about We Paint Siding is that we are a specialized and niche service provider. And painting aluminum, along with vinyl siding is the most central service we offer.

You can trust that not only are our individual painters experienced and skilled with the process and equipment necessary to perform a top-quality job, but our entire procedure is highly refined from doing well over 1000 of these jobs over the past 20 years. From initial quote, to scheduling, to painting, to 10-year warranty, we are confident that we have the best process for refinishing exterior siding.

It's Time to Paint Aluminum - A Great Substrate for Paint!

Many homeowners STILL do not realize that aluminum siding is an outstanding substrate for paint. Yes it needs to be cleaned correctly, and applied correctly, and the proper paint is required…

But ultimately the non-porous and moisture-stopping nature of aluminum means that once the coating has been applied, bonded, and cured, it WILL NOT peel. There is no moisture passing through the aluminum and therefore not stressing the film of the coating, unlike on wood surfaces, for example.

So it comes down to doing the job correctly every time. Please read on to learn how we accomplish this for our important homeowner and commercial clients.

A Detailed Process and Plan for Every Job

We take pride in our systems and quality control for every paint job.

  1. From the initial free estimate, all the details and concerns about your job will be considered
  2. Scheduling is done mostly by email and we’re sure to always keep the homeowner informed and up-to-date
  3. When it’s time to clean the siding, our staff have a clear Pressure Washing Work Order to ensure all surfaces are properly cleaned and no surrounding areas are damaged
  4. When it comes time to paint the siding, the crew always has a very detailed Work Order and Safety and Hazard Assessment to ensure nothing is missed and everyone remains safe
  5. At the beginning of each job, using the provided Work Order, the crew will develop a plan that takes into account many factors that might affect the painting experience. Some examples include: Current weather conditions, forecasted weather conditions, preparation work required, number of colour tones, timing of door painting, size of crew, and many others. This plan is completed via an online checklist and submitted for the project manager and scheduler to see and keep tabs on
  6. Every day our crews are required to complete checklists that cover many details of the progress of the job
  7. Updates are regularly sent to the customers as the information from the checklists flows seamlessly down the line
  8. The work is executed according to the vast expertise that We Paint Siding has developed over the years in doing this kind of work and understanding the specific care that aluminum siding needs
  9. We take great pride in our systems to ensure quality control and outstanding results for each of our customers

The Advantage of Spray Painting for Aluminum Siding

Spray painting offers a distinct set of advantages for aluminum siding, a preference we at We Paint Siding have adopted based on extensive experience and positive outcomes. Here’s an overview of why spray painting is particularly beneficial for aluminum siding:

  • Uniform Coverage: Spray painting ensures an even coat across the entire surface of the aluminum siding. This uniform application is crucial for materials like aluminum, which won’t absorb paint in the same way that wood siding does. The spray technique ensures that every inch of the siding receives an equal amount of product, avoiding the patchy or uneven appearance that can occur with hand painting.

  • Efficiency in Application: Although the preparation and masking is considered tedious and time-consuming for many painting companies, we’ve developed endless techniques and systems to optimize it over the years. This means that our trained crews, working as a team, can accomplish a spray-painting job faster than other professionals can do by brush or roller. For homeowners, this means a quicker turnaround time, resulting in less disruption to daily life. The speed of spray painting doesn’t compromise on quality but ensures that the entire process is more efficient.

  • Better Adhesion and Durability: A key concern when dealing with aluminum siding is ensuring the paint adheres well and lasts. Spray painting applies the material in a way that allows it to bond more effectively to the aluminum surfaces. By using the right kind of paint, a flexible and high-quality acrylic paint that is formulated for spray application, we ensure that the coating adheres properly.

  • Reaching All Areas: Given that aluminum siding is often horizontal, it can be challenging to get paint into every nook and cranny with a paint roller or brush. Spray application allows us to cover all areas thoroughly, including hard-to-reach spots and edges, ensuring a comprehensive job. This is especially important when painting other metal surfaces like eavestroughs, fascia, soffits, flashing, and trim.

  • Professional Finish: The finish achieved by spray painting is amazingly smoother and more professional-looking than hand painting. This is especially important for aluminum siding, as any imperfections can be more visible on its smooth surface. The spray method gives a sleek, clean look that enhances the aesthetic of the home’s exterior.
  • More Advantages: Visit our Spray Painting page for even more detail and information about the advantages of this amazing method, such as increased durability, stronger molecular bonding, and self-cleaning properties!

Our experience allows us to leverage the advantages of spray painting to deliver a superior service when it comes to refinishing aluminum siding. Our experienced professional painters understand the nuances of working with different siding materials, including aluminum, and employ the best techniques to ensure your home looks great and the finish lasts for years to come.

The Process for Your Aluminum Siding Painting Project

At We Paint Siding, we bring a meticulous and professional approach to our aluminum siding painting projects. Our goal is to revitalize your home’s exterior with a fresh, beautiful, and durable coating. Here’s a look at our process:

Using a Power Washer to Prepare the Siding for Painting

  • Thorough Cleaning: The first step is to clean the aluminum siding thoroughly. We use a power washer to ensure that all dirt, grime, and residues are removed. This step is crucial as it allows the new paint to adhere properly to the surface.
  • Extension Wands: We use very long extension wands (up to 24 feet) to not only safely reach high areas, but to ensure they are cleaned properly and that surrounding surfaces are not damaged.
  • Allowing Time to Dry: After power washing, we ensure the siding is allowed to dry completely. It’s essential that no moisture remains on the aluminum surfaces before we start painting.

Surface Preparation and Masking

  • Scraping and Sanding: Your old aluminum siding may have some areas of flaking or peeling paint, or may have some ivy or other vegetation remnants stuck to it. We will scrape and sand these areas to bring it back to a smooth surface. We aim for 85-90% removal of old vegetation remnants, and we ensure that whatever does remain will in no way affect the longevity or adhesion of the paint job.
  • Filling of Holes and Gaps: We will caulk or fill any nail or screw holes in your siding. Old crumbling window caulking will be replaced or repaired as per standard painting procedure. We do not fully remove old caulking (unless it’s crumbling out), but we will seal up any deficiencies.
  • Repairing of Dents: We can fill noticeable dents in the siding if desired. This is a labour intensive and fairly costly process so many customers do not opt for it, but it does produce great results, much like auto-body work on a car or truck. There may be one or two dents in noticeable areas where this is a great option.
  • Masking Off Surrounding Areas: To avoid painting areas unintentionally, we mask off windows, doors, and other surfaces not meant to be painted. This precision ensures a clean, professional finish. Masking is a huge part of our process and you can read more about it on our Spray Painting page.
  • Priming: In some situations it’s necessary to prime the siding before painting, usually if the aluminum has lost all of its finish and is down to completely bare and ‘shining’ metal. All of our paints are self-priming, highly-adhesive, and formulated for metal and vinyl siding, but sometimes it’s best to apply a dedicated layer of primer as well. We will let you know if this step is necessary or advised for your project.

Spray Painting the Siding for an Exquisite Finish

  • Following the Plan: Using the plan that was developed, our painters will work methodically around the house spraying out the siding as the areas are masked off. They work in an orderly manner, staying in the shade as much as possible, and allowing the material to self-level and cure properly.
  • Spray Painting Technique: We use a spray painting technique to apply the acrylic paint. Spraying ensures an even coat across the surface, especially when dealing with aluminum siding, where the smooth nature of the metal shows any imperfections or unevenness in the finish on top.
  • Coating Thickness: When spray painting we’re able to build up the coating as we go. This means applying multiple layers or coats as we go. Sometimes we will allow a coat to dry and then apply another, but other times we can build it up all at once. In any case, since there is no friction ‘pushing the paint around’ like with brush and roller, we are able to build up and lay on a coating via spray that is 2-3 times thicker than a traditional 2 coats of hand painting.
  • Ensuring Uniformity: As the siding is horizontal, we are careful to apply the paint evenly across each panel of siding, ensuring a consistent and uniform look. This requires skill and expertise to avoid drips, runs, ‘holidays’, or ‘flashing’. (You can Google those last two terms if you like!)

The ‘Reveal’ and Touch-Ups and Clean Up

  • De-Masking: Not until the masking is all pulled down can you really see the immense impact the paint job has had on the look of your house. This is the funnest part of the job and we never tire of seeing the look on our customers’ faces when they see the results!
  • Final Inspection and Touch-Ups: After the job is complete, our professional painters inspect the siding. Any necessary touch-ups are made to ensure perfection in every detail.
  • Cleaning Up: We believe in leaving your property as clean as we found it. All masking materials are removed, and the area is tidied up to showcase the beauty of your newly painted siding.

Throughout this process, we focus on delivering a high-quality paint job that not only looks great but also stands the test of time. Our experienced team ensures every step is done right, from cleaning aluminum siding to the final touch-ups, making us a trusted professional painting company for your exterior painting project. If you’re considering painting your siding, and you’re looking for a reliable way to paint your home, we’re here to help you transform your home with a fresh, new look.

Other Considerations for Painting Exterior Aluminum Siding

When it comes to painting exterior aluminum siding, there are several critical factors to consider ensuring the job is done right. Our experience in dealing with aluminum siding has taught us that attention to detail makes all the difference.

Choosing the Right Paint for Aluminum Siding

  • Type of Paint: The kind of paint used on aluminum siding is crucial for its longevity and appearance. We typically use an ultra high-quality exterior acrylic paint that is formulated for spray application, which adheres well to aluminum surfaces and withstands various weather conditions.
  • Paint Brands: Typically we use either Super Paint or Latitude from Sherwin Williams or Diamond from Dulux. Though there are other great and appropriate products available as well.
  • Benefits for Homeowners: The right product not only improves the look of your home but also protects the siding from elements, a significant consideration for any homeowner.
  • Colour Options: Aluminum siding requires a high quality paint, but there are no restrictions when it comes to colour selection. Just note that darker colours will fade from the sun more quickly than lighter colours. We have many projects that are 8-10 years old, in light to moderate colours, that still look just as good as the day they were painted!

Tools and Equipment for Our Aluminum Painting Services

  • Precision Tools: From high-performance sprayers to pressure washers to quality sanders and preparation tools, we use the appropriate equipment to apply primer and paint efficiently. This ensures a smooth, even coat on every panel of siding.
  • Safety Gear: Safety is paramount in our painting process. Our team is equipped with the necessary gear to ensure the job is done safely, especially when working on exterior siding. We go far above industry standards when it comes to fall arrest and ladder safety, often installing anchor points, utilizing harnesses, or even arranging aerial lifts when necessary or advantageous.
  • Professional-Grade Equipment: The equipment we use is specifically chosen for its effectiveness in painting exterior siding like aluminum. This includes ladders, scaffolding, pressure washers, and a plethora of tools for masking and access that we’ve discovered and utilized over the years.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Painting Aluminum Siding

We find it absolutely shocking how poor of a job most painting companies do when it comes to cleaning aluminum siding. This is really the most important and crucial preparation step when doing these kinds of jobs. Some mainstream companies do not even pressure wash at all, and most others that do will not use extension wands or proper equipment. Just ‘misting’ some water way overhead is not a proper cleaning job. And trying to pressure wash from a ladder is dangerous and leads to slack and ineffective work by the employee.

Besides cleaning issues, it’s important to remove all loose paint or vegetation remnants from the surface. It’s important to fill gaps an cracks before painting, not afterwards just because they’re easier to see. We ensure the siding is properly prepared before we start painting.

Applying layers that are too thick can lead to runs and an uneven finish. Our professional painters know the right amount of material to use on aluminum. This come with skill, training, and experience.

The time to paint is crucial. We avoid working directly in extreme weather to ensure the product dries correctly and adheres well to the siding. This is much more than just avoiding bad days. It’s important to avoid painting in direct sunlight as much as possible on any day. It’s also important to plan the job around morning dew, afternoon winds, or upcoming forecasted rain or humidity. At We Paint Siding we take all of these things and much more into consideration when completing our job planning checklists every single day.

Painting aluminum siding by hand or without proper experience can result in a subpar job. Our team’s professional painting experience ensures that every project is completed with the highest standards.

Aluminum siding can be refinished by hand, as long as it’s prepared properly and a high quality acrylic latex paint is used. But spray painting has so many advantages that if you’re paying a professional, it doesn’t make any sense for them to do it by hand. Hire a company who has spraying and siding painting experience instead.

At We Paint Siding, we bring our comprehensive knowledge and professional approach to every exterior painting project, particularly when dealing with materials like aluminum. Our focus is on delivering a service that meets the specific needs of your aluminum siding, ensuring a result that is as durable as it is beautiful.
